Reports of a Congress-BJP coalition in Maharashtra’s Ambernath Municipal Council elections were denied by Congressman Sachin Sawant on Wednesday. His explanation followed rumors that the Shiv Sena, led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, had been sidelined in an unanticipated political realignment to capture power.
Sawant explained that leaders of all political parties are banding together to combat Shinde Shena corruption, not just the BJP and Congress.
“In Ambernath, setting aside party affiliations and symbols, various party workers have formed the Ambernath Development Front against the corruption perpetrated by the local-level Shinde Sena. Independents are also included in this. Therefore, news reports claiming that Congress and BJP have come together are incorrect. Please take note,” he wrote on X.
The Shiv Sena, a party that the BJP shares power with in Maharashtra but has since been forced out of the power equation in Ambernath, was deeply offended by the allegations of the alliance. Shinde camp MLA Balaji Kinikar called the partnership a “unholy alliance” and charged the BJP of treachery. An alliance with the Shiv Sena would have been genuinely unholy, according to BJP vice-president Gulabrao Karanjule Patil, who has rejected the accusation.
Patil accused the Shinde-led party of corruption over the previous 25 years and said that the BJP had tried multiple times to form a more comprehensive coalition with the Shiv Sena in Ambernath, but its leadership had not responded favorably.
