India’s ace shuttler PV Sindhu advanced to the semifinals of the Malaysia Open Super 1000 after her quarterfinal opponent, Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi, was forced to retire due to injury in Kuala Lumpur. The high-profile clash ended prematurely after Sindhu took a commanding lead in the opening game.
Sindhu began the match in dominant fashion, controlling rallies and dictating the pace against the world No. 3. She wrapped up the first game 21–11 in quick time, putting Yamaguchi under sustained pressure. The Japanese star, who appeared to be struggling with a knee issue and was seen wearing support, found it difficult to move freely on court. Unable to continue after the opening game, Yamaguchi conceded the match, sending Sindhu into the last four.
The result marks a significant achievement for Sindhu, who has been steadily regaining form following injury setbacks in recent seasons. Reaching the semifinals of a Super 1000 tournament highlights her return to competitive sharpness at the highest level of the BWF World Tour.
Earlier in the tournament, Sindhu impressed with a clinical straight-games victory over Japan’s Tomoka Miyazaki, underlining her confidence and rhythm. Her aggressive shot selection and strong defense have stood out during the campaign.
In the semifinals, Sindhu is set to face a tough challenge as she looks to continue her run in one of badminton’s most prestigious events. Her performance so far has raised hopes of a deep finish and reinforced her status as India’s leading force in women’s singles badminton.
