Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have extended the closure of schools and colleges across the Kashmir Valley for another week following widespread protests linked to the escalating conflict in the Middle East. The decision comes amid demonstrations held in response to reports surrounding Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Officials said the shutdown is a precautionary step aimed at maintaining law and order as protests continued in several districts, particularly in parts of Srinagar and other areas with sizeable Shia populations. Educational institutions, including higher secondary schools and colleges, will remain closed until the end of the week, with authorities closely monitoring the ground situation. Large gatherings were reported in parts of the Valley, where protesters marched through streets, raised slogans and expressed solidarity over developments in Iran. Security forces were deployed in sensitive zones to prevent unrest and ensure public safety. In some areas, restrictions on movement were imposed, and security presence was intensified to deter any escalation.
The administration also announced that examinations scheduled during this period would be postponed. Students have been advised to stay updated through official notifications regarding revised dates and reopening schedules. Officials stressed that the safety of students and staff remains the top priority.
Key locations in Srinagar, including commercial hubs and public squares, witnessed heightened security arrangements. Authorities also reviewed internet services in certain areas as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of inflammatory content and misinformation.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah appealed for calm and urged residents to maintain peace. He said while people have the right to express their sentiments, it is important to ensure that demonstrations remain peaceful and do not disrupt daily life. The situation continues to be under close watch, with the administration indicating that further decisions on reopening institutions will depend on how circumstances evolve in the coming days.
