Nitish Kumar Steps Down as Bihar Chief Minister, Files Nomination for Rajya Sabha

Veteran politician Nitish Kumar resigned as the Chief Minister of Bihar on Thursday and filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha, marking a major political shift in the state. The development signals Kumar’s transition from state-level leadership to a role in national politics after years of dominating Bihar’s political landscape.
Soon after submitting his resignation, Kumar reached the Assembly complex in Patna to file his nomination papers for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. The event was attended by several senior leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, highlighting strong support from the ruling alliance for Kumar’s move to the Upper House of Parliament.
Kumar has served multiple terms as Bihar’s chief minister and has been one of the most influential political figures in the state for nearly two decades. His leadership has shaped several governance and development initiatives in Bihar, and his decision to step down from the post has triggered widespread political discussion across the state.
Explaining his decision, Kumar said he had long wished to serve in both Houses of Parliament and felt it was the right moment to take on a national role. He also thanked the people of Bihar for their continuous support throughout his political career and said he would continue contributing to the state’s development even after leaving the chief minister’s office.
The resignation has now created a leadership vacuum in Bihar, prompting discussions within the NDA regarding the selection of the next chief minister. Political observers believe the Bharatiya Janata Party could play a crucial role in deciding the new leadership, as the party remains a key partner in the ruling alliance. However, the move has sparked sharp criticism from opposition parties. Leaders from various opposition groups alleged that the change in leadership was the result of political pressure and strategic planning by the ruling alliance. Some opposition figures claimed the development reflected an attempt to alter the balance of power within the state government.
The decision has also led to mixed reactions among supporters of Kumar’s party, the Janata Dal (United). Reports from Patna indicated that some party workers expressed disappointment over his resignation and gathered outside his residence, urging him to continue as chief minister. Kumar’s shift to the Rajya Sabha marks the beginning of a new phase in his long political career. Having played a central role in Bihar’s politics for many years, his departure from the state’s top executive post is expected to significantly reshape the political dynamics in Bihar.
