Instagram to Remove Encrypted Chats Feature From May 8

The social media platform Instagram has announced that it will discontinue its end-to-end encrypted chat feature starting May 8, a move that has raised concerns among privacy advocates and users. The feature, which ensured that only the sender and receiver could read the messages, will no longer be available on the platform’s direct messaging system.
End-to-end encryption was introduced as an optional feature to provide users with an additional layer of privacy while communicating through the app. With this system in place, even the platform itself could not access the contents of private conversations. However, once the feature is removed, messages exchanged through Instagram may be accessible to the company for moderation and monitoring purposes.
The decision has prompted debate over the balance between online safety and user privacy. Supporters of the change argue that removing encryption could help the platform detect and prevent harmful activities such as harassment, scams and the circulation of illegal content. Without encryption, the platform will have greater ability to review messages and take action against violations of its policies.
The company has also informed users who currently use encrypted chats that they should download or back up their messages before the deadline. After May 8, encrypted conversations and related data may no longer be accessible within the application.
Industry experts say the move reflects increasing pressure on social media platforms to improve content moderation and strengthen safety mechanisms. However, critics warn that eliminating encrypted messaging could weaken digital privacy protections for millions of users worldwide. The development highlights the ongoing debate within the technology sector about how platforms should balance security, transparency and user privacy while maintaining safe online communities.
