As oil prices increase owing to the US and Israel’s war on Iran, President Donald Trump’s proposal that nations send their warships alongside US naval forces to maintain the Strait of Hormuz “open and safe” has not resulted in any immediate pledges.
“Hopefully China, France, Japan, South Korea, the UK, and others, that are affected by this artificial constraint will send ships to the area so that the Hormuz Strait will no longer be a threat by a nation that has been totally decapitated,” Trump wrote in a post on his Truth Social platform.
China “will be a constructive partner” in reopening the Hormuz Strait, according to US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, who told the NBC network on Sunday that he has been “in dialogue” with several of the nations Trump listed.
However, nations have not pledged anything. According to Liu Pengyu, a spokesman for China’s Embassy in the US, “all parties have the responsibility to ensure stable and unimpeded energy supply,” and China will “strengthen communication with relevant parties” in order to defuse the situation.
In an effort to harm the global economy and put pressure on Washington as energy prices soar, Iran’s military is successfully shutting the vital waterway in retribution for US and Israeli operations.
Tehran claims that everyone, with the exception of the United States and its allies, can cross the Hormuz Strait, which typically handles one-fifth of the world’s oil exports.
Tehran has been “approached by a number of countries” asking safe passage for their warships, according to Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Abbas Araghchi, who told the US network CBS that “this is up to our military to decide.”
Two Indian-flagged gas tankers were able to cross the strait on Saturday thanks to talks between New Delhi and Tehran, according to Indian Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar. Since the crisis began on February 28, at least ten oil tankers have been hit, targeted, or have reported attacks, according to statistics from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO),In the past, France stated that it was considering an international operation to escort ships across the strait, but emphasized that it would only happen when “the circumstances permit,” that is, when the conflict has stopped.
