Supreme Court criticises West Bengal over Kolkata Metro delays

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/23rd March 2026

The Supreme Court of India has strongly reprimanded the West Bengal government for delays in the construction of a key Kolkata Metro corridor, particularly the Orange Line project. The court expressed concern over what it described as an “obstinate attitude” by the state, accusing authorities of creating unnecessary obstacles in the path of a crucial public infrastructure initiative.

During the hearing, the bench emphasised that development projects meant for public benefit should not be hindered by political considerations. It clearly stated that such delays affect millions of daily commuters and undermine the broader goal of urban development. The court also dismissed the state’s justifications, including logistical issues, festivals, and election-related constraints, noting that these cannot be valid reasons to stall essential projects.

Backing earlier directions issued by the Calcutta High Court, the apex court urged authorities to ensure the project is completed within a fixed timeline. It further warned against politicising development work and stressed the need for cooperation between agencies. The ruling highlights the judiciary’s firm stance on ensuring timely execution of infrastructure projects in the public interest.
