Violence during Ram Navami procession in Murshidabad prompts Section 144

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/28th March 2026

Clashes broke out in parts of West Bengal’s Murshidabad district during Ram Navami celebrations, leading authorities to impose prohibitory restrictions to restore order. The violence was reported from areas including Murshidabad and Raghunathganj, where a religious procession reportedly turned tense following a dispute.

According to officials, the unrest began when disagreements arose during a Ram Navami procession, allegedly over music being played along the route. The situation escalated rapidly from a verbal altercation into physical confrontation, with groups engaging in stone-pelting. Eyewitness accounts indicated that the clashes spread quickly across nearby localities, creating panic among residents.

As tensions intensified, incidents of vandalism and arson were reported. Several shops and vehicles were damaged, while public property also bore the brunt of the violence. The sudden outbreak of unrest forced many local residents to remain indoors, with markets shutting down and normal life coming to a halt in affected areas.

Police and administrative authorities responded by deploying heavy security forces to the region. Additional personnel were rushed to sensitive pockets to contain the situation and prevent further escalation. Senior officials monitored the developments closely, while law enforcement agencies carried out patrols and flag marches to reassure the public.

To maintain order, authorities imposed Section 144 in the affected areas, restricting the gathering of four or more people. The move was aimed at preventing further clashes and ensuring that tensions did not spiral out of control. Officials stated that the restrictions would remain in place until the situation stabilises completely.

While authorities confirmed that the situation has largely been brought under control, a sense of unease continues to prevail in certain pockets. Security has been tightened, and continuous monitoring is underway to avoid any fresh incidents. Residents have been urged to maintain calm and refrain from spreading misinformation, particularly on social media.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over communal tensions during religious processions in sensitive areas. With West Bengal heading into an important political phase, such disturbances have raised questions about law and order preparedness during major festivals.

Authorities have assured that those responsible for the violence will face strict legal action. Efforts are ongoing to restore normalcy, rebuild confidence among residents, and ensure that peace is maintained in the region in the coming days.
