Operation HimSetu Launched to Evacuate Stranded Tourists in North Sikkim

The Indian Army has launched Operation HimSetu in North Sikkim to rescue tourists stranded in Lachen following recent landslides that severed connectivity in the region. The operation is being carried out under the leadership of the Trishakti Corps and the supervision of the Eastern Command, demonstrating rapid and coordinated military response to natural calamities.
Heavy snowfall, treacherous terrain, and extreme weather have posed significant challenges, but soldiers have displayed extraordinary commitment to ensuring the safety of civilians. Priority has been given to medical emergencies, with teams attending to affected tourists and providing urgent assistance. So far, 135 tourists along with their vehicles have been successfully evacuated to safer locations.

The Army is working in close coordination with civil authorities, local administration, and emergency services to manage ongoing evacuation efforts. Approximately 1,000 tourists remain stranded, and teams are strategising phased evacuations while monitoring weather conditions to ensure minimal risk.
The operation highlights the Army’s operational readiness, resilience, and dedication to safeguarding citizens in distress. By combining strategic planning with on-ground agility, the forces are exemplifying the ethos of service above self. Authorities continue to advise tourists to remain patient and cooperate with rescue personnel, as coordinated efforts aim to restore safety and connectivity in the region.
