Howrah : A political roadshow in North Howrah turned violent on Sunday after supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) clashed during a campaign event led by actor and BJP MP Ravi Kishan. The roadshow was organised in support of BJP candidate Umesh Rai ahead of the second phase of polling. The incident took place in the Liluah area, where tension began when workers of both parties raised rival slogans during the procession. Supporters from one side shouted “Jai Shri Ram,” while the other side responded with “Jai Bangla.” What began as a verbal exchange quickly escalated into a confrontation.

Within minutes, the situation reportedly turned chaotic, with both groups engaging in physical clashes. Allegations of stone-pelting, vandalism, and damage to party materials further increased tension in the area. Both parties blamed each other for starting the violence.
As the unrest intensified, police and central security forces stepped in to control the crowd. A lathi-charge was carried out to disperse the workers and restore order. Security was tightened in the locality, and a heavy police presence remained in place to prevent further trouble.
Reacting to the incident, Ravi Kishan strongly criticised the violence and blamed the ruling party’s political culture for the disturbance. On the other hand, TMC leaders accused the BJP of bringing in outsiders to create unrest during the campaign.
The clash has added to the tense political atmosphere in West Bengal as the state moves closer to the next phase of voting. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the area to ensure law and order is maintained.
