Axar Patel Fined ₹12 Lakh for Slow Over-Rate Despite Delhi Capitals’ Win Over Punjab Kings

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 12th May 2026

Axar Patel, captain of the Delhi Capitals, has been fined ₹12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during his side’s IPL 2026 clash against the Punjab Kings in Dharamshala. The penalty was imposed after Delhi Capitals failed to complete their quota of overs within the prescribed time during Match 55 of the tournament. According to an official IPL statement, the fine was issued under the league’s Code of Conduct related to minimum over-rate offences.

IPL officials clarified that since it was Delhi Capitals’ first such offence of the season, only the captain was penalised with a ₹12 lakh fine. Repeated violations later in the tournament could result in heavier sanctions, including increased fines and possible suspension for the team captain.

Despite the disciplinary action, Delhi Capitals secured a crucial three-wicket victory in a high-scoring encounter that kept their playoff hopes alive. Chasing a target of 211 runs, Delhi overcame early setbacks with important contributions from Axar Patel and David Miller. Axar led from the front with a quick half-century under pressure, while Miller played an aggressive innings to revive Delhi’s chase after the team lost wickets during the powerplay. The innings was later finished by Ashutosh Sharma and Madhav Tiwari as Delhi successfully reached the target with an over to spare.

Earlier, Punjab Kings posted a competitive total of 210 for 5 after strong batting performances from Priyansh Arya and skipper Shreyas Iyer. Priyansh provided a rapid start at the top of the order, while Iyer anchored the innings with an unbeaten knock. The victory proved important for Delhi Capitals in the race for the IPL playoffs, while Punjab Kings missed an opportunity to strengthen their position near the top of the points table.

Slow over-rate penalties have become increasingly common in recent IPL seasons as the Board of Control for Cricket in India continues to strictly enforce match timing regulations. Captains across franchises have faced fines due to delays caused by field changes, tactical discussions and extended reviews during matches.
