NEW DELHI – Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to take urgent corrective steps to restore confidence of the people post school teacher recruitment scam.

“The irregularities found in the teacher requirement scam of West Bengal will certainly hamper the quality of education and demotivate the future generation,” Pradhan said in a communiqué to Banerjee on August 2. addressing the Chief Minister as ‘Didi’.

Pradhan assured his ministry’s continuous support and highest consideration to ensure access to quality education for all children in West Bengal.

He also said a large number of representations from various teachers and teachers’ organizations were received by his ministry in Delhi regarding irregularities in teachers requirement process in the eastern state.

It is “a matter of grave concern”, Pradhan said.

The central minister drew the attention of Banerjee to the process of appointment of teachers through the State Level Selection Test (SLST) that started in 2014.

But the actual recruitment could take place only two years later in 2016, the minister said.

Actual recruitment process was compromised and several petitions against this process were filed, Pradhan wrote to Banerjee.

“Another related case is the recruitment process of Group C and D staff in government-run aided schools as notified by the state government in 2016 to the School Service Commission (SSC), is also a matter of grave concern,” said Pradhan.
