India and Canada are moving rapidly to strengthen economic ties, with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney describing the proposed trade agreement between the two countries as a potential “game changer” for bilateral commerce and investment.
The remarks came during a meeting between Carney and Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal in Canada, where both sides reviewed progress on negotiations for the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. The trade pact is expected to significantly expand cooperation in sectors such as energy, technology, manufacturing and agriculture.
Carney said Canada was working swiftly to deepen engagement with India, calling the country one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies. He noted that the agreement could open major opportunities for businesses, workers and investors in both nations while improving market access and boosting long-term trade growth.
The Indian delegation visiting Canada included more than 100 senior business representatives from sectors such as mining, clean energy, aerospace and automobiles. Discussions focused heavily on strengthening collaboration in critical minerals, renewable energy and advanced manufacturing, areas viewed as strategically important for both economies.
Speaking after the talks, Goyal said relations between the two countries had witnessed a significant turnaround in recent months. He expressed confidence that the proposed trade agreement could be finalised by the end of the year and described the renewed diplomatic engagement as a major step toward rebuilding trust and economic cooperation.
India and Canada have set an ambitious goal of increasing bilateral trade to 50 billion US dollars by 2030. Trade negotiations between the two countries had slowed in 2023 following diplomatic tensions linked to allegations surrounding the killing of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. India had firmly rejected the allegations, leading to a strain in ties.
Relations began improving after Carney assumed office and initiated efforts to restore diplomatic and commercial engagement with New Delhi. Earlier this year, both countries also signed agreements covering uranium supply, energy cooperation and technology partnerships, signalling a broader push to strengthen long-term strategic and economic relations.
