Mekedatu Dam Dispute Puts Congress in Difficult Position Amid Tamil Nadu-Karnataka Tensions

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 4th June 2026

The long-standing dispute over the proposed Mekedatu dam project on the Cauvery river has resurfaced, creating fresh political challenges for the Congress as conflicting interests in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu come to the forefront.

The controversy intensified after Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar reaffirmed his government’s commitment to the Mekedatu balancing reservoir project. Karnataka has consistently argued that the project is necessary to address Bengaluru’s growing drinking water requirements and improve water management in the state.

However, the proposal has triggered strong opposition in Tamil Nadu, where political parties and farmer groups fear that the construction of a reservoir upstream could reduce the flow of Cauvery water to the state. Tamil Nadu leaders maintain that the project could adversely affect the livelihoods of farmers in the Cauvery delta region and undermine existing water-sharing arrangements between the two states.

Amid the growing political debate, Congress MP Manickam Tagore came out in defence of his party, rejecting allegations that the Congress was compromising Tamil Nadu’s interests. He accused rival parties of attempting to politicise the issue and asserted that the Tamil Nadu Congress remained committed to protecting the state’s rights over Cauvery waters.

The dispute has placed the Congress in a delicate position. While the party is part of the ruling establishment in Karnataka and supports developmental initiatives in the state, it also seeks to maintain its political standing in Tamil Nadu, where opposition to the Mekedatu project remains strong.

Political observers note that the issue has once again highlighted the complexities of inter-state river disputes in India, where regional interests often clash despite political alliances. The Cauvery water-sharing issue has historically been a sensitive subject, frequently leading to legal battles and political confrontations between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

With both states refusing to soften their positions, the Mekedatu project is expected to remain a major point of contention. As political rhetoric intensifies and legal proceedings continue, the dispute is likely to have significant implications for regional politics and inter-state relations in the coming months.
