CBI Intensifies RG Kar Probe, Questions Former Kolkata Police Officers

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 20th June 2026

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has stepped up its investigation into the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case, questioning two former senior Kolkata Police officers and summoning former Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal for further examination next week.

The latest development marks a significant phase in the agency’s renewed probe into allegations of irregularities and possible lapses in the handling of the case following the death of a postgraduate trainee doctor at the state-run hospital in August 2024. The incident had triggered widespread outrage across the country and led to prolonged protests by medical professionals demanding justice and accountability.

As part of the fresh inquiry, the CBI questioned former Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Indira Mukherjee and former Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Abhishek Gupta. Investigators reportedly sought details regarding the actions taken by police officers during the initial stages of the investigation, including the collection of evidence and the sequence of events that followed the discovery of the victim’s body.

The renewed scrutiny follows directions from the Calcutta High Court, which asked the agency to investigate allegations that there may have been attempts to destroy evidence or conceal crucial facts related to the crime. The court had expressed concern over claims that certain aspects of the investigation were not adequately examined and called for a deeper probe into the circumstances surrounding the case. Investigators are also examining whether established procedures were properly followed and if any actions may have affected the course of the investigation.

The CBI is expected to question former Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal next week as part of its effort to reconstruct the timeline of events and determine whether there were administrative or investigative shortcomings. His testimony is likely to be closely watched given his leadership role at the time of the incident.
