Chinese smartphone maker Honor has introduced the Honor X80 Pro Max, claiming it is the first smartphone in the world to feature a display capable of reaching a peak brightness of 10,000 nits. The announcement marks a new milestone in the ongoing race among smartphone manufacturers to deliver brighter and more advanced OLED screens.
The Honor X80 Pro Max’s headline feature is its OLED display, which surpasses previous brightness records held by competing smartphones. According to the company, the screen can achieve a peak brightness of 10,000 nits under specific conditions, a significant jump from the 6,000 nits offered by its predecessor. The display also features a 1.5K resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate and ultra-thin bezels designed to enhance the viewing experience.
However, industry experts note that the 10,000-nit figure refers to peak brightness achieved in limited HDR scenarios rather than everyday usage. The phone’s High Brightness Mode (HBM), which is used for outdoor visibility under direct sunlight, reportedly reaches around 2,000 nits—comparable to many premium smartphones currently available in the market. As a result, the record-setting specification is viewed largely as a technological achievement and marketing differentiator rather than a feature users will experience regularly.
Beyond the display, the X80 Pro Max packs an enormous 11,000mAh battery, one of the largest ever fitted into a mainstream smartphone. The device is expected to support 90W wired fast charging and is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 chipset. Other key features include a 50-megapixel primary camera, IP69K durability certification and several color options. While questions remain about the practical benefits of a 10,000-nit screen, the Honor X80 Pro Max demonstrates how brands are increasingly using advanced OLED innovations to stand out in a crowded global smartphone market.
