The Celebration of World Tiger Day at Bijoygarh College, Kolkata Created Grand Opportunity for Student Learning and Education Towards Tiger Conservation

August 6, 2026, Kolkata: The International Tiger Day celebrated across the planet on July 29 highlights the vital interrelationship between tigers, mangrove ecosystems, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable environmental stewardship. The event was being organized by Bijoygarh College, Kolkata in collaboration with the Purono Kolkata Group (PKG) and was attended by approximately 150 participants, including students, faculty members, environmental enthusiasts, invited guests, dignitaries and PKG members. The program was jointly organized by Bijoygarh Jyotish Ray College, Instituition’s Innovation Council, Radio Kolkata, Purono Kolkata Group (PKG), Society for Audio Visual Studies on Life and Environment (SAVSLE) and Howrah Suparna under the aegis of United Religions Initiative (URI).
The observance of World Tiger Day 2026 at Bijoygarh College on August 6, 2026 in collaboration with the Purono Kolkata Group presented an unique opportunity integrating environmental awareness, biodiversity conservation, and student engagement through an academic and community-oriented platform. World Tiger Day is not merely a celebration of an iconic species; but a global campaign to emphasize the importance of conserving entire ecosystems.
As an apex predator, the tiger serves as an umbrella species, and its conservation contributes directly to the protection of forests, wetlands, mangroves, freshwater resources, and countless other forms of biodiversity. The programme highlighted the ecological relationship between tiger conservation and the mangrove ecosystems of the Sundarbans, reinforcing the importance of ecosystem-based conservation. Dr. Saikat Kumar Basu representing Howrah Suparna (URI) provided a global picture of tiger poulations across the globe. Bijan Kumar Mandal (SAVSLE) made an excellent presentation on the topuc, ‘When nature is the Creator.”
Finally, Dr. Jayanta Sen and Swarnali Chattyopadhyay of PKG made an illustrious presentation on the tiger population dynamics and ecology across India.
This unique programme benefited Bijoygarh College by enhancing its reputation as an institution committed to environmental education, sustainability, and community outreach. It strengthened the college’s profile in organizing meaningful academic extension activities aligned with national and global environmental priorities, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goals 4 (Quality Education), 13 (Climate Action), and 15 (Life on Land). The event provided the students with valuable experiential learning opportunities beyond the classroom. Through expert lectures, interactive discussions, exhibitions, cultural presentations, and awareness activities, students got the grand opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of wildlife conservation, climate resilience, ecological restoration, and responsible citizenship. The participation in this programme enhanced their scientific temperament, communication skills, leadership abilities, teamwork, and environmental stewardship.
The programme encouraged interdisciplinary learning by bringing together students and faculty from science, arts, commerce, and social science disciplines. Such collaborative engagement promoted critical thinking and innovative approaches for solving complex environmental challenges; while inspiring students to pursue careers and research in conservation, ecology, environmental sciences, and sustainable development.
Supporting such initiative, successfully contributed towards building environmental awareness among young citizens while fostering a culture of conservation within higher education. This can certainly create long-term educational value, strengthen institutional capacity, and inspire future generations to become responsible custodians of India’s rich natural heritage. The celebration of the World Tiger Day 2026 at Bijoygarh College successfully transformed into a meaningful and impactful educational event with enduring benefits for the institution, its students, and the wider community.
