BRS Women MLAs Allege Police Manhandling During Assembly Protest in Telangana

Tension erupted outside the Telangana Legislative Assembly on Monday after Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) legislators alleged that police personnel used force against women members of the party during a protest. The confrontation took place as BRS legislators attempted to enter the Assembly premises wearing black T-shirts as part of their protest against the Congress government in the state.

BRS women legislators alleged that they were manhandled by police officers while they were being prevented from proceeding towards the Assembly. The leaders claimed that the police used excessive force during the confrontation, with some alleging that they were grabbed by the throat and pulled by their hair.

BRS MLA V. Sunitha Laxma Reddy and former minister P. Sabitha Indra Reddy were among those who raised allegations regarding the conduct of the police during the incident. According to the party, the confrontation became physical as police attempted to stop the legislators from entering the Assembly premises. The BRS alleged that Sunitha Laxma Reddy’s saree was torn during the scuffle and that she suffered minor injuries. Party leaders strongly condemned what they described as the use of force against elected women representatives and demanded action against the police personnel involved.

The confrontation occurred against the backdrop of a protest planned by BRS legislators inside or around the Assembly premises. The legislators were reportedly wearing black T-shirts to register their opposition to the Congress government and highlight their political demands. Police personnel attempted to prevent the protesting legislators from proceeding, resulting in a heated exchange between the two sides.

The incident quickly escalated, with visuals and accounts of the confrontation becoming a major point of discussion among political circles in Telangana. BRS leaders accused the police of behaving aggressively towards the protesting legislators and argued that elected representatives should not have been treated in such a manner.

The party said it would raise the issue with the Telangana Legislative Assembly Speaker. BRS leaders demanded that the alleged conduct of the police be examined and that appropriate action be taken against personnel found responsible for manhandling the women legislators.

Senior BRS leaders also joined the criticism of the police action. BRS working president K. T. Rama Rao and senior leader T. Harish Rao were among those detained during the confrontation, according to the report. Their detention further intensified the political dispute between the opposition party and the ruling Congress.
