Bangladesh BRICS Invitation Was for BIMSTEC Chair, Not PM Rahman

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 11th September 2026

Bangladesh’s invitation to attend the BRICS summit in New Delhi was extended in its capacity as the chair of BIMSTEC, rather than as a personal invitation to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, according to a clarification from Dhaka. The development comes as India hosts the expanded BRICS grouping, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi holding a series of important bilateral meetings, including talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The clarification sought to address reports surrounding Bangladesh’s participation in the summit. Officials in Dhaka indicated that the invitation was linked to Bangladesh’s position as the current chair of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, or BIMSTEC.

The distinction is diplomatically significant as India continues to place emphasis on regional cooperation through BIMSTEC, particularly amid changing political and economic dynamics in South Asia. Bangladesh’s participation was therefore connected to its institutional role within the regional grouping rather than being a standalone invitation to its prime minister.

The BRICS summit has brought several major world leaders to New Delhi and provided Prime Minister Modi with an opportunity to strengthen India’s engagement with key partners. His meeting with Putin has emerged as one of the major bilateral engagements surrounding the summit.

Putin invited Modi to visit Russia for the next India-Russia annual summit, an invitation that the Indian prime minister accepted. The development underlined the continuing importance of the relationship between New Delhi and Moscow despite the geopolitical pressures surrounding Russia.

The BRICS gathering is also significant because of the participation of leaders from several emerging economies and the grouping’s growing focus on trade, investment and cooperation in areas such as energy and technology. Against this backdrop, the Bangladesh-BIMSTEC clarification highlights the wider regional dimension of the summit. While Bangladesh’s invitation was tied to its role as BIMSTEC chair, India has continued to use the BRICS platform to pursue broader diplomatic objectives.
