UK PM Andy Burnham Says UK Could Consider Rejoining EU If Benefits Outweigh Costs

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 1st October 2026

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said the United Kingdom could consider rejoining the European Union in the future if the benefits of doing so were found to outweigh the disadvantages. His comments have revived discussion over the country’s long-term relationship with the bloc following Britain’s departure from the EU.

Burnham said the government should approach the question by examining the potential advantages and drawbacks of closer integration with the European Union. Rather than committing to a return, he indicated that any decision would depend on whether such a move could deliver clear benefits for the UK.

The prime minister’s remarks come amid renewed debate in Britain over the consequences of Brexit and the country’s future ties with European nations. While the UK remains outside the EU, discussions have continued over ways to strengthen cooperation in areas such as trade, security and economic relations.

The possibility of Britain eventually seeking EU membership was welcomed by leaders in France and Spain. French President Emmanuel Macron and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez signalled that they would be open to the UK returning to the European bloc.

Macron and Sánchez’s responses underline the changing tone surrounding relations between Britain and the EU. Since Brexit, London and Brussels have worked to establish new arrangements governing their relationship, while businesses and political groups in Britain have continued to debate the economic and strategic effects of leaving the bloc.

Burnham’s comments are also significant because they go beyond discussions about improving the existing UK-EU relationship and acknowledge the possibility of a future return. However, he did not announce any formal policy to seek EU membership, and the government would need to assess the political and economic implications of such a move.

The issue is expected to feature in broader discussions ahead of a proposed UK-EU summit later this year. Any move towards rejoining the EU would involve negotiations over Britain’s relationship with European institutions and would represent a major shift from the country’s post-Brexit arrangements.

For now, Burnham’s position is that the question should be considered on the basis of Britain’s interests, with the potential gains weighed against the costs and limitations involved.
