What Couples Therapists Want You to Know About Saving a Relationship That’s Going Downhill

News Mania Desk/ 3rd October 2026

An unhappy relationship can affect much more than emotional wellbeing. Persistent conflict, resentment and poor communication have been associated with sleep problems, physical symptoms and increased vulnerability to mental-health difficulties. Children can also be affected when they are repeatedly exposed to intense parental conflict.

That does not mean every troubled relationship is beyond repair. Couples therapists generally emphasize that improvement begins with recognizing unhealthy patterns and addressing them together rather than simply trying to “win” arguments.

Open communication, active listening, rebuilding trust and learning how to manage disagreements constructively can help couples reconnect. Professional couples counselling can also provide a structured environment to identify recurring problems and develop healthier ways of communicating.

However, saving a relationship is not always the right or safest goal. Where there is abuse, coercive control, intimidation or ongoing harm, the priority should be safety rather than preserving the relationship.

Ultimately, relationships can change—but meaningful improvement usually requires willingness, accountability and sustained effort from both partners.
