Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated the Pune Metro Pink Line and launched several infrastructure projects worth approximately Rs 21,800 crore, marking a significant step towards expanding public transportation and improving urban connectivity in Maharashtra.

The newly inaugurated Pune Metro Line 3, popularly known as the Pink Line, stretches 23 kilometres and has been developed at a cost of more than Rs 8,300 crore. The corridor connects Maan in Hinjewadi with the District Court Metro station, providing an important transport link between Pune’s major information technology hub and central parts of the city, including Shivajinagar.

The project is expected to improve connectivity for thousands of employees working in the Hinjewadi IT corridor, while offering commuters an alternative to road transportation. The expansion is also aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving daily travel across Pune’s rapidly growing residential and commercial areas. One of the distinctive features of the Pink Line is that the entire corridor will be operated by women train operators. The initiative is being viewed as an important step towards increasing women’s participation in the public transportation sector.

The metro corridor also incorporates measures to promote environmentally sustainable transportation. Approximately 30 per cent of its electricity requirements will be met through solar power, helping reduce dependence on conventional energy sources and supporting cleaner urban mobility. Apart from inaugurating the Pink Line, Modi laid the foundation stone for four additional metro corridors under Pune Metro Phase II. The proposed expansion involves an investment of approximately Rs 13,500 crore and is expected to strengthen connectivity across several important parts of the city.

The four proposed corridors, identified as Lines 2A, 2B, 4 and 4A, will connect areas including Vanaz, Chandani Chowk, Kharadi, Khadakwasla and Manik Baug. These routes are expected to improve access to residential neighbourhoods, commercial centres and major employment hubs. The projects form part of the government’s broader push to modernise urban infrastructure and expand mass rapid transit networks in major Indian cities.

With the latest inauguration and proposed expansion, Pune is expected to witness a substantial improvement in its metro rail network, offering commuters more convenient transportation options while supporting the city’s growing economic and population needs. The projects are also intended to encourage greater use of public transport and promote sustainable urban development.
