Education Is Not A For-Profit Enterprise: SC

The Supreme Court has ruled in favor of regulating tuition costs charged by private universities, stating that fees set for professional courses must be reasonable and that education should not be provided for financial gain.
The Andhra Pradesh government’s decision to permit private medical colleges to increase tuition seven times to Rs 24 lakh per year in 2017 was overturned by a bench of Justices M R Shah and Sudhanshu Dhulia, who also ordered the colleges to refund the extra money they collected from students between 2017 and 2020.
The court stated that the Admission and Fee Regulatory Committee (AFRC) was to be established in accordance with its ruling in the P A Inamdar case, and that it was followed by the state government as well, but that in spite of this, the fee was revised after receiving recommendations from the statutory panel.
The SC invalidated the AP government’s decision to permit private medical colleges to raise tuition seven times to Rs 24 lakh per year in 2017, stating that fees for professional courses must be reasonable.
