According to news agency , a third-year resident doctor from Nagaland assigned to the AIIMS Gorakhpur was allegedly physically assaulted, stalked, and subjected to racist epithets by three individuals on Sunday night close to the institute’s grounds. Numerous people have condemned the incident, and worries about the safety of medical personnel and prejudice toward Northeasterners have been rekindled.

The obstetrics and gynecology resident was returning to school and making her way to Gate No. 2 near the Army camp when the incident happened, according to police, at approximately 8 p.m. on February 22.The accused allegedly confronted her close to the institute gates after following her for almost 1.5 kilometers.

Although he would not reveal the precise clauses cited in the FIR, Kaustubh, the senior superintendent of police for Gorakhpur, said that a complaint had been filed at the AIIMS police station in accordance with the applicable legal rules.

The doctor claimed in her lawsuit that the three men made derogatory comments and racist epithets about her northern heritage. In an effort to scare her, one of them allegedly took off his shirt, while another allegedly made inappropriate physical contact with her. She sounded the alarm, and the three of them ran away.

The National Federation of Resident Doctors of AIIMS and INIs (NAFORD) highlighted the episode on social media, describing it as a “Shocking case of racial harassment and sexual assault on a third-year OBGYN resident near AIIMS Gorakhpur. Around 8 PM, on 22nd Feb, 2026 , while exiting Orion Mall, Gorakhpur (UP), three men stared, laughed, passed racially discriminatory comments, reducing her to stereotypes (being from NorthEast),” the federation alleged in a post on X.

“She tried to confront them, but instead they stalked and followed her on the road toward AIIMS Gate No. 2, hurling abuses & slang. One of them deliberately removed his shirt to intimidate. Near the army camp at Gate No. 2, one man suddenly slapped even her on the buttocks,” the NAFORD post read.

“This left deep shock, humiliation & trauma on our resident doctor. As a doctor dedicated to women’s health & bringing new life, she was violated near her own institution,” it added.

Calling the incident “deeply shameful”, Nagaland Chief Minister Conrad Sangma expressed shock and strongly condemned the incident, urging authorities to act firmly.

“Racial discrimination and sexual harassment of women from the North East should not just be a headline, sensationalized, forgotten and revived every time a fresh incident appears,” he wrote on X. “The racial and sexual abuse of a resident Doctor of AIIMS Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh from Nagaland is deeply shameful. Outraging a woman’s modesty is not what a civilized nation should tolerate. They are your sisters and daughters too. Urge the authorities to take stringent actions against the perpetrators,” he demanded.
