A Man With A Rare Immunological Condition Is Being Treated In A Hospital In Kolkata

At a city private hospital, a patient with Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD), a rare immunological condition that had compromised his heart, was effectively treated. Only eight cases of the illness that affects the eyes and the heart have been reported so far in the entire world.

The patient is one of the first cases involving the heart to be diagnosed in India, according to Fortis Hospital Anandapur, where the patient is currently being treated. After surgery, the 53-year-old patient is stable and continues to receive care.

According to KM Mandana, director of cardiothoracic and vascular surgery at the hospital, the patient’s first symptoms were recurrent pericardial effusion (fluid buildup) that resulted in swelling in the eyes and a bloated face. During a routine chest exam, the patient’s eyes were bulging out of their sockets, and a computed tomography scan revealed a lesion, according to Mandana.

The area behind the eyes was biopsied, and the results showed swollen lymph nodes. He was identified as having Rosai-Dorfman illness as a result of the high-resolution CT scan that also revealed nodules in the right thyroid and kidney. The patient’s persistent fluid buildup and pericardial constriction were both contributing factors to her shortness of breath. Various hospitals repeatedly drained the fluid.

Starting with low doses of steroid therapy, RDD is treated. The patient underwent a cardiac procedure for a recurring collection of effusion around the heart as a result of the unexpected emergence of RDD in odd cardiac locales and the appearance of a histiocytic fibro lesion. But during surgery, the doctors discovered that he had Rosai-Dorfman Disease, which caused lymphatic tissue to infiltrate the heart and the pericardium to become involved. A biopsy was performed after the pericardium was surgically removed, and the results revealed that the patient had a rare RDD that was damaging his heart.
