A man attempted to enter Brazil’s Supreme Court on Wednesday and then killed himself with a bomb outside the institution, officials said, raising security fears ahead of the country’s hosting of world leaders from the Group of 20 major countries. The explosions occur five days prior to the G20 heads of state meeting in Rio de Janeiro and Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to the capital, Brasilia. On Wednesday night, a parking lot close to the court building was the scene of the first of two explosions. A second explosion occurred seconds later in front of the court, where the man’s body was discovered.

Preliminary evidence, according to Federal District Vice Governor Celina Leao, indicated that the guy attempted to infiltrate the Supreme Court before killing himself with explosives. According to her, he possessed a car in the area whose trunk was blown open by another explosion.

Although she couldn’t be certain, Leao stated that she hoped it was the crime of a “lone wolf.” Because they were concerned about the possibility of other explosives on the body, police claimed they had not yet established a definitive identification of the deceased guy.

The Plaza of the Three Powers, a famous square in Brasilia that links the main structures of Brazil’s three federal government institutions, was the site of the explosions. On January 8 of last year, it was the scene of disturbances as Jair Bolsonaro’s supporters looted the buildings in protest of his loss in the election. To look into the explosions, police sent a bomb team with an explosive disposal robot to the square in the center of the Brazilian city.

The Supreme Court said in a statement that the justices had just concluded a plenary session when the explosions occurred and were promptly and securely evacuated. Shortly before the blasts on Wednesday night, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva had departed the executive mansion.
