Amid rising tensions in Kolkata, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) President, Kalyan Chaubey, has made a heartfelt appeal to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to reinstate the Durand Cup 2024 matches at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK) Stadium. The matches, originally scheduled at this iconic venue, were abruptly canceled due to unrest in the city, leading to disappointment among football fans and players alike.

In his official correspondence, Chaubey expressed his deep concern over the situation, urging the Chief Minister to take immediate action. “In my capacity as the President of the AIFF, I earnestly urge your office to take all necessary steps and measures to ensure that the Durand Cup matches can be held in Kolkata as scheduled,” read Chaubey’s plea. His request underscores the importance of the Durand Cup to Kolkata’s rich football culture, particularly the highly anticipated Kolkata Derby match between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal FC.

The decision to cancel the matches, especially the Derby, which is one of the top five most renowned football rivalries globally, has not only shocked the football community but has also sparked widespread protests. Fans of both Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, known for their unwavering passion, gathered in large numbers to express their discontent. The Derby is more than just a game in Kolkata; it’s a historical event deeply intertwined with the city’s identity. With Mohun Bagan founded in 1889 and East Bengal in 1920, these clubs carry a legacy that is integral to Kolkata’s footballing heritage.

The unrest following the cancellation saw a significant backlash from the local community. Fans, united in their disappointment, took to the streets to demand the reinstatement of the matches. The situation escalated when the police resorted to lathi charges to disperse the crowd, leading to multiple arrests. In a show of solidarity with the fans, Mohun Bagan’s captain, Shubhasish Bose, joined the protests, highlighting the deep emotional connection between the players and their supporters.

Chaubey’s involvement extended beyond just formal appeals. He took personal action to support the fans, sharing a photo on social media with those he helped release on bail, further demonstrating his commitment to the cause. His actions have resonated with many in the football community, who view his leadership as a beacon of hope in these challenging times.

With the cancellation of the matches in Kolkata, the Durand Cup quarterfinals have been relocated to alternative venues. The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong and the SAI Stadium in Kokrajhar will now host the games, marking a significant shift from the tournament’s traditional stronghold in Kolkata. The Durand Cup, established in 1888 and recognized as the oldest football tournament in Asia, holds a special place in the hearts of football enthusiasts, making the relocation a bittersweet moment for many.

As the situation unfolds, the AIFF and football fans across India remain hopeful that the matches will return to Kolkata, allowing the city to continue its proud tradition of hosting one of the world’s most historic football events. The decision now lies in the hands of the West Bengal government, with many eagerly awaiting a positive outcome that will restore Kolkata’s place at the center of Indian football.
