Air India Reduces International Operations Amid Rising Fuel Costs

News Mania Desk / Piyal Chatterjee /13th December 2025

Air India has announced the suspension and reduction of flights on 29 international routes until August as rising fuel prices and global geopolitical tensions continue to impact the aviation industry. The airline stated that the decision was taken to maintain operational stability and manage increasing costs linked to the ongoing crisis in West Asia.
Several international services connecting India with destinations in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia will either operate with reduced frequency or remain temporarily suspended. Reports said routes involving cities such as San Francisco, Vancouver, Melbourne, Sydney and Chicago are among those affected by the revised schedule.
The airline cited the sharp rise in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices as one of the key reasons behind the move. Industry experts noted that global crude oil prices have increased significantly due to tensions involving Iran, Israel and the United States, creating additional financial pressure on airlines worldwide. Higher fuel costs, longer flight paths and disruptions in regional airspace have also increased operational expenses for carriers.
Air India is also reportedly dealing with aircraft availability issues and supply-chain challenges related to maintenance and spare parts. Aviation analysts said the combination of rising fuel prices and logistical constraints has forced airlines to reassess route profitability and operational efficiency.
Passengers affected by the changes are being offered options such as refunds, rescheduling and alternative travel arrangements. The airline said it is informing travellers and travel agents about revised flight timings and updated schedules.
Experts added that if fuel prices continue to rise, more airlines may introduce similar reductions in services over the coming months. Air India stated that the revised schedule is temporary and will be reviewed periodically depending on fuel prices, passenger demand and geopolitical developments. The airline maintained that passenger safety and reliable operations remain its top priorities during the ongoing global uncertainty.
