Amazon Launches Web Version of Alexa+ AI Assistant, Expanding Access Beyond Devices

Amazon has introduced a web-based version of its upgraded AI assistant, Alexa+, allowing users to interact with the service directly through a browser. The move marks a significant expansion of Alexa’s presence beyond smart speakers and mobile apps, as the company seeks to position its assistant as a more versatile, action-oriented AI tool.
The new web platform, available at Alexa.com, is currently open to users enrolled in Amazon’s early access programme. By signing in with their Amazon accounts, users can chat with Alexa+ in a text-based format, making it easier to use the assistant at work or on devices without voice support. Amazon said the web interface has been designed to be intuitive, with quick access to commonly used features and ongoing conversations. Alexa+ builds on generative AI capabilities to go beyond answering questions. The assistant can manage calendars, create reminders, maintain to-do lists, and help with planning tasks such as travel itineraries or meal ideas. It can also control compatible smart home devices remotely and assist with bookings or reservations, reflecting Amazon’s push to turn Alexa into a more proactive digital assistant.
One of the key features of Alexa+ is its ability to retain context across interactions. Tasks started on an Echo device or the Alexa mobile app can be continued on the web, offering a seamless experience across platforms. Amazon said this continuity allows Alexa+ to understand user preferences over time and provide more personalised responses.
The company is also updating the Alexa mobile app to align it with the new AI-driven experience, focusing on conversational interactions and task completion. The redesign is aimed at making Alexa feel less like a voice command tool and more like an intelligent assistant capable of handling complex requests.
The web launch signals Amazon’s intent to compete more directly with popular AI chatbots by making Alexa accessible wherever users are, not just in their homes. While the rollout is currently limited, Amazon is expected to gradually expand access, positioning Alexa+ as a central part of its broader AI strategy.
