Amid the Monkeypox scare, another viral disease ‘Tomato fever’ is haunting India; know the signs, symptoms and steps to protect yourself

Kerala was the first state to report the first three cases of Monkeypox in India. Now, 80 cases of tomato fever or tomato flu have been reported in the state, taking the total tally up to 100 in India. While Karnataka Health Minister K Sudhakar said that there is no reason to be alarmed about the outbreak, experts warn against negligence and recommend taking necessary measures. That said, here is a complete understanding of the viral disease along with its cause, signs, and symptoms. Tomato fever or tomato flu, also known as the hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), is a rare viral illness that is characterized by rashes and blisters all over the body. It has nothing to do with eating tomatoes, rather it acquired its name because of the likeness of the rashes to tomatoes, in terms of shape and color. Experts believe tomato fever is a condition that primarily affects kids below age 5. The origin of tomato fever is currently unclear. However, it is believed to be a rare viral illness. While the disease is not life-threatening or fatal, it is however said to be highly contagious.
