According to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the Constitution grants the Election Commission its status as an impartial body that is neither elected nor supported by any organization. Speaking in the Lok Sabha during a debate on SIR, he claimed that the opposition is damaging the reputation of India’s democracy abroad by casting baseless doubts and questions about the impartiality of the Election Commission of India. He denounced the opposition parties for filing an impeachment motion against Madras High Court Judge GR Swaminathan, claiming that this is the first time in independent India that the opposition has done so because the judge did not decide in their favor.

He claimed that the opposition only used press conferences to disseminate false information on the EVM and election results. He asked why they didn’t show up for the Election Commission’s EVM hackathon and why they didn’t file objections in court. Amit Shah stated in the Lok Sabha that the Congress has not once proposed or contacted the Election Commission with an election reform since May 2014. Opposition MPs make a tremendous fuss after the statement.

While speaking about Rahul Gandhi’s three questions in Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Amit Shah said:

For 73 years, there was no law to select an Election Commissioner. The Prime Minister used to directly select the poll body chief, Amit Shah said.

From 1950-1989, the Election Commission was a one-person panel. The PM used to send a file to the President, and the latter would notify the same – it was fine then.

From 1989-91, a multi-member panel was introduced to govern the poll panel, he added.

In 2023, we made a law that there would be a Prime Minister, a minister chosen by him and the Leader of Opposition who will elect the Election Commissioner. We brought transparency.

Amit Shah clarified in Lok Sabha that the CCTV footage of a polling station is deleted after 45 days as per law. Why do they question it? “Why don’t they ask for it before 45 days of voting?” he asked. He clarified in Lok Sabha that keeping the CCTV footage record of a polling booth is for internal management, not an admissible document.

Amit Shah said that when the law is so clear, then what is the problem of the Opposition. Amit Shah said that the main concern of these parties is that they want to keep illegal residents and intruders on the voter list.  Speaking in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, Amit Shah warned the West Bengal Trinamool Congress government not to pay attention to Rahul Gandhi. He asserted that the Mamata Banerjee administration should abstain from releasing land for the construction of a fence along the border with Bangladesh.
