An Ex-King Of Bhutan Forewarned India About China

Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the then-king of Bhutan, had forewarned India of Chinese pressure in 1999.
Former Research & Analysis Wing (R&AW) chief AS Daulat made this remark in his book.
Dulat claims that the previous King’s statements were prophetic on the ensuing infrastructure buildup by China and the India-China tensions in Doklam in 2017.
Additionally, he claims that New Delhi’s strong stance on a number of subjects, such as the Kashmir problem and its strict foreign policy in the region, resulted in failures.
Dulat spent time with “K4”, the reigning monarch at the time, during his three-day trip to Thimphu in 1999.
“Democracy will arrive more quickly than later. However, [the Indian establishment] is making life somewhat challenging for us”. The previous Bhutanese King reportedly told Dulat during his visit that “the Chinese are breathing down our necks.”
Daulat continued by saying that the King was certain that if India pushed Bhutan too hard, the issues with China would only become worse. Dulat comments in the memoirs, “The old King [Jigme Singye Wangchuck] was a clever man and looking back, his remarks have proven prophetic.”
