Merchants’ Chamber of Commerce & Industry organised an Exclusive Session on “Port Infrastructure & Logistics”, today at Kolkata.
The Session was addressed by Shri Vinit Kumar, Chairman, Syama Prasad Mookherjee Port, Kolkata.
In his welcome address, Shri Kothari lauded that National Logistics Policy by the Government of India is a significant step to ensure last mile connectivity and addressing transport-related challenges, in a time bound manner. Adoption of technology to strengthen the logistic sector, paperless EXIM trade process, provisions for e-way bills, FASTag etc. have greatly increased the efficiency of the logistics sector. PM Gatishakti National Master Plan for muti-modal connectivity and the National Logistics Policy would complement each other going forward, he mentioned.
Shri Vinit Kumar in his address mentioned that Kolkata Port Trust has already initiated PPP in port infrastructure projects. In Kolkata port there is one project worth 1 cr. and in Haldia, there is another project with a private group worth 250 cr.
Shri Kumar stated that the trial run for cargo movement from Kolkata to northeast via Bangladesh port has been successfully conducted and now Govt. of India will sign an agreement with Govt. of Bangladesh.
KOPT has already made a revised land policy and it will be operational very shortly, said Mr. Kumar.
While speaking on port infrastructure, he mentioned that out of 32km., 24 km. of road around the Port has been rebuilt by the authority and half of it is concrete road.
He further highlighted various measures taken by KOPT such as improvement of drafts, initiation of night navigation, focusing on transshipments and putting of a dedicated crane at sagar besides others.
The Session concluded with a hearty Vote of Thanks proposed by Shri Vishal Jhajharia, Past President, MCCI. In his address, Shri Jhajharia mentioned that given the importance of global value chains, there is an increasing focus on the efficient management of ports and logistics system. Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT), the oldest and only riverine port of India, plays a significant role in the economy.
