ANI files case on Netflix for using it’s content in IC-184

News agency ANI’s lawyer told Reuters on Monday that the organization has filed a lawsuit against Netflix Inc. and the creators of an Indian series about an aircraft hijack, requesting the removal of four episodes for using ANI content without authorization.
Released last month, the series “IC-814: The Kandahar Hijack” is a fictionalized account of the 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines flight 814 from Kathmandu. It has been the subject of controversy.
Members of the Bharatiya Janata Party, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and social media users have criticized the show for what they claim is an inaccurate depiction of the hijackers as Muslims who were given Hindu names.
“They have used copyright archival footage of ANI without licence, they have also used the (ANI) trademark,” Sidhant Kumar, counsel for ANI, said.
The six-episode series now has additional disclaimers on Netflix, following the information and broadcasting ministry’s summons of company representatives last week. Additionally, it claimed that the code names employed in the series corresponded to those used in real life.
He stated that Netflix has been asked to respond by the Delhi High Court, which had agreed to hear the issue.
Netflix did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters, which owns a small share of ANI.
