Anil Kapoor Secures Rights to ‘Nayak’, Eyes Potential Sequel

Bollywood veteran Anil Kapoor has reportedly acquired the copyright to the 2001 political drama “Nayak: The Real Hero”, nearly 25 years after its release, sparking widespread buzz about a possible sequel to the cult classic.

According to industry reports, Kapoor has purchased the rights to the film from producer Deepak Mukut, who previously held them. The move comes decades after the original production was released, and could pave the way for a fresh chapter in the story that has endured in popularity among audiences.

“Nayak,” directed by S. Shankar, starred Kapoor in the lead role as Shivaji Rao Gaekwad, a television journalist who unexpectedly becomes the Chief Minister of Maharashtra for a day and attempts to reform the system. The film’s themes of political accountability, media influence, and public service resonated with audiences, helping it attain a lasting legacy in Hindi cinema.

The original cast also featured Rani Mukerji, Amrish Puri, Paresh Rawal, Saurabh Shukla, Johny Lever and others in key roles. Over the years, the film’s dialogue, characters, and narrative have continued to be referenced in popular culture, contributing to its enduring status.
