Bollywood veteran Anil Kapoor has reportedly acquired the copyright to the 2001 political drama “Nayak: The Real Hero”, nearly 25 years after its release, sparking widespread buzz about a possible sequel to the cult classic.
According to industry reports, Kapoor has purchased the rights to the film from producer Deepak Mukut, who previously held them. The move comes decades after the original production was released, and could pave the way for a fresh chapter in the story that has endured in popularity among audiences.
Sources close to the development say that Kapoor views the acquisition as deeply personal. “The film is close to his heart,” one insider noted, adding that the actor believes the subject of “Nayak” still has “tremendous potential” for a sequel. While there has been strong industry speculation, no official confirmation has yet been issued about the green-lighting of a new instalment.
“Nayak,” directed by S. Shankar, starred Kapoor in the lead role as Shivaji Rao Gaekwad, a television journalist who unexpectedly becomes the Chief Minister of Maharashtra for a day and attempts to reform the system. The film’s themes of political accountability, media influence, and public service resonated with audiences, helping it attain a lasting legacy in Hindi cinema.
The original cast also featured Rani Mukerji, Amrish Puri, Paresh Rawal, Saurabh Shukla, Johny Lever and others in key roles. Over the years, the film’s dialogue, characters, and narrative have continued to be referenced in popular culture, contributing to its enduring status.
Although Kapoor’s acquisition has fuelled excitement, industry watchers caution that a sequel will require careful scripting and planning, especially given changing audience expectations and the evolving landscape of political thrillers in Indian cinema. Fans of the original are keen to see how a contemporary continuation would balance the legacy of the first film with fresh storytelling. Kapoor has previously spoken fondly of “Nayak,” reflecting on its relevance years after release.
