Composer Anirudh Ravichander has recently encountered criticism following the release of the song “Chuttamalle” from the highly anticipated film Devara. The song, which debuted on August 5, has been met with a mixed reception, with some fans praising its melodious charm while others have expressed disappointment. The backlash centers around allegations that the song bears a striking resemblance to the viral Sri Lankan hit “Manike Mage Hithe.”
The release of “Chuttamalle” was eagerly awaited by fans of the film and Anirudh Ravichander. The track, a romantic melody, showcases the lead characters, played by Jr NTR and Janhvi Kapoor, dancing in beautifully shot locations. Despite the visual appeal and pleasant tune of the song, many listeners took to social media to voice their dissatisfaction. Critics on platforms like X have pointed out similarities between “Chuttamalle” and “Manike Mage Hithe,” suggesting that Ravichander’s composition is not original.
Anirudh Ravichander himself promoted the song by sharing the YouTube link for “Chuttamalle” and its dubbed versions in multiple languages. While the composer received some positive feedback for the song’s melody, the criticism overshadowed the praise. The controversy follows earlier concerns about the film’s music, as the first song, “Fear Song,” had also been compared to “Badass” from Thalapathy Vijay’s film Leo.
Directed by Koratala Siva, Devara: Part 1 is an action-drama film featuring a star-studded cast, including Jr NTR, Saif Ali Khan, and Janhvi Kapoor. The movie is set to be released in two parts, with the first installment scheduled to hit theaters on September 27. The film also stars Shruti Marathe, Prakash Raj, Srikanth, Shine Tom Chacko, Narain, and Kalaiyarasan in supporting roles, with Anirudh Ravichander handling the music composition, Rathnavelu as the cinematographer, and Sreekar Prasad as the editor.
The criticism surrounding “Chuttamalle” highlights a recurring challenge in the music industry, where originality is often debated and compared against popular tracks. Despite the negative feedback, it is important to recognize that music composition is a creative process that can sometimes draw inspiration from various sources. As Devara approaches its release date, both the film and its music are likely to continue generating discussion and anticipation among audiences.
