Trump Claims US Tariffs Prompted Nations to Abandon BRICS Amid Dollar Concerns

US President Donald Trump has defended his tariff policy against BRICS members, asserting that the bloc was “an attack on the dollar.” Speaking at the White House, Trump claimed that countries were “dropping out” of BRICS after he threatened to impose tariffs on them for attempting to replace the American currency.

Trump’s comments came amid renewed global debate over BRICS’ push for alternative trade mechanisms to reduce reliance on the dollar. The BRICS grouping, originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has recently expanded to include new members such as Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. These nations have been exploring options to conduct trade in local currencies or establish a new reserve currency, challenging the dominance of the US dollar in global trade.

In response to these developments, Trump stated, “I told anybody who wants to be in BRICS, that’s fine, but we’re going to put tariffs on your nation. Everybody dropped out. They’re all dropping out of BRICS.” He emphasized his strong stance on the dollar, adding, “I’m very strong on the dollar, and anybody that wants to deal in dollars, they have an advantage over people that aren’t.” Trump further claimed that BRICS was an “attack on the dollar” and that his tariff threats led to countries reconsidering their participation in the bloc.

The expansion of BRICS and its push for alternative trade mechanisms have raised concerns in the United States about the potential erosion of the dollar’s dominance in global finance. Analysts suggest that Trump’s tariff policies may have inadvertently accelerated this trend by prompting countries to seek alternatives to the dollar.

As the global economic landscape continues to evolve, the dynamics between the US and BRICS nations remain a focal point of international trade discussions.
