Apple (AAPL.O) opened a new tab on Wednesday and began integrating OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its smartphones, delivering on a long-awaited feature that investors believe could boost sales of its latest iPhones.

The distribution is part of a larger deployment of AI-powered features in the most recent operating system updates for iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers.  The ChatGPT integration, which was unveiled in June as part of the Apple Intelligence unveiling, would allow the company’s Siri voice assistant to tap into the chatbot’s knowledge, including answering user questions about photographs and documents such as presentations.

Users can also instruct ChatGPT to generate written material in any app that supports the new Writing Tools functionality. They can use the chatbot’s image generating features to contribute images.  The shift coincides with the peak holiday shopping season, the company’s most profitable sales period of the year. The delayed distribution of Apple Intelligence features thus far has increased investor concerns about the robustness of the iPhone 16 sales cycle.

The AI features will be available on the most recent iPhone models, as well as the Pro and Pro Max variants of the previous iPhone 15 lineup. Users of iPads with A17 Pro or M1 chips and after, as well as Macs with M1 chips and later, can access the tools.
