News Mania Desk / Agnibeena Ghosh/20th April 2024

In a groundbreaking move towards enhancing user privacy and device performance, Apple’s highly anticipated iOS 18 is poised to introduce a host of new AI features that operate entirely on-device, eliminating the reliance on cloud servers. This transformative shift, as revealed in a recent report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, underscores Apple’s steadfast commitment to safeguarding user data and elevating the user experience.

Gurman, in his Power On newsletter, unveiled that the initial wave of AI features in iOS 18 will harness the power of on-device processing, thereby obviating the need for cloud-based computation. Notably, this includes the integration of a robust language model to power the innovative AI capabilities, as reported by macrumors. While Apple intends to retain certain cloud-based AI functionalities in collaboration with providers like Google’s Gemini, the company is strategically prioritizing on-device processing for its AI ecosystem.

Discussions have been underway between Apple and tech behemoths such as Google, OpenAI, and China’s Baidu, exploring potential partnerships in the realm of generative AI. While the inclusion of Apple’s own ChatGPT-like chatbot in iOS 18 remains uncertain, analysts speculate on the integration of Gemini or other chatbots directly into the operating system. Apple’s proactive investment in AI servers further hints at the possibility of introducing additional in-house cloud-based AI features in the future.

The forthcoming iOS update is rumored to deliver generative AI enhancements across various native Apple applications, encompassing Spotlight search, Siri, Safari, Shortcuts, Apple Music, Messages, Health, Numbers, Pages, and Keynote. Gurman’s prior reports indicate that this AI upgrade will empower Siri to tackle more intricate queries and augment the auto-completion feature within the Messages app.

Apple enthusiasts can anticipate further insights into iOS 18 and other software updates at the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), slated to occur from June 10 to June 14. Against the backdrop of the escalating importance of AI in enriching user experience, Apple’s embrace of on-device AI in iOS 18 heralds a significant leap towards a smarter and more privacy-centric digital ecosystem. Attendees at WWDC can expect an immersive exploration of Apple’s latest innovations, underscoring the company’s unwavering dedication to pushing the boundaries of technology while prioritizing user privacy and security.
