The sixth day of the ongoing Budget Session of the Parliament of India witnessed a mix of crucial financial proceedings and heated political exchanges, as lawmakers navigated key legislative business amid continued disruptions.
In the Rajya Sabha, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced the Appropriation Bill, 2026. The bill is a vital component of the budgetary process, authorising the government to withdraw funds from the Consolidated Fund of India to meet its expenditure for the financial year 2025–26. Its passage is necessary to operationalise the allocations announced in the Union Budget.
Meanwhile, in the Lok Sabha, discussions were held on the Demands for Grants for the Ministry of Railways for the financial year 2026–27. Members from across party lines debated various aspects of the railway sector, including infrastructure development, passenger safety, service quality, and modernisation initiatives. The Railways allocation has been a major highlight of this year’s budget, reflecting the government’s continued focus on expanding and upgrading the country’s transport network.
However, the legislative proceedings were marked by repeated disruptions as opposition members raised several contentious issues. Disagreements over topics such as LPG pricing concerns and the process surrounding the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner led to heated arguments between the treasury and opposition benches. The disruptions affected the smooth functioning of both Houses at various points during the day.
Beyond the parliamentary debates, political developments outside the House also drew attention. Preparations for upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in several states, including Bihar, Haryana, and Odisha, intensified, with political parties actively strategising to strengthen their representation in the Upper House.
