Weapons Theft From Madras Regiment Armoury Triggers High Alert in Secunderabad Cantonment

A security breach at the highly secured Secunderabad Cantonment in Telangana has triggered a high alert after several firearms and magazines were found missing from the Madras Regiment armoury. The incident has prompted a major investigation by the Army and local police, with authorities examining how the weapons were removed from the military premises.

The theft came to light on August 31 when Army personnel opened the armoury and ammunition storage areas for routine verification. Officials found that locks on the main storage facility as well as boxes containing weapons and ammunition had been broken. A subsequent check revealed that several firearms and magazines were missing. The weapons had reportedly last been accounted for on August 30.

According to officials, the missing weapons include four AK-203 assault rifles along with magazines, an INSAS 1B1 rifle and several 9mm pistols. A civil pistol and additional magazines were also reported missing. The disappearance of such a quantity of arms from a protected military establishment has raised serious questions over security arrangements inside the cantonment.

Following the discovery, defence personnel approached the Bollaram police station under the Malkajgiri commissionerate and lodged a complaint. Police and Army officials have begun a joint investigation to determine when and how the weapons were taken and identify those responsible.

Investigators are examining the possibility that more than one person was involved, given the number of weapons and magazines reported missing. Officials are also looking into whether the theft could have involved someone familiar with the internal functioning of the military facility, while keeping all possibilities open during the investigation.

The incident has also led authorities to heighten security measures in and around the cantonment area. Schools located within the cantonment have been advised to conduct classes online as a precautionary measure amid the heightened security situation.

Police have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita concerning house-breaking and theft from a building used for the custody of property. Search and investigative operations are continuing as authorities work to trace the missing weapons and establish the circumstances surrounding the breach.

The theft has raised concerns over the security of sensitive military installations and prompted closer scrutiny of access controls and safeguards at the cantonment.
