Amit Shah Performs Bhoomi Pujan for World’s Largest Curd Production Plant in Kolkata, Highlights Vision of ‘Sonar Bangla’

Kolkata | July 18, 2026: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday performed the Bhoomi Pujan for what is being described as the world’s largest curd (Mishti Doi) production plant under the Amul Bengal Dairy Project in Kolkata. The project is expected to significantly strengthen West Bengal’s dairy infrastructure, create employment opportunities, and boost the state’s milk processing capacity.

Addressing a large gathering during the ceremony, Amit Shah said he had come to Bengal on behalf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to “sweeten the mouths of the people of Bengal with Mishti Doi” following the BJP’s victory in the recent West Bengal Assembly elections.

Speaking about the state’s political journey, Shah said the mandate reflected a historic transformation. According to him, Bengal’s political change was unlike any other state election since Independence and marked the beginning of a new chapter for the state.

Recalling Bengal’s historical legacy, Shah said the state had once been a leading force in education, culture, literature, industry, and nationalism. He alleged that Bengal later remained under Communist rule influenced by foreign ideologies and subsequently fell under the governance of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), which he accused of corruption, criminality, and lacking ideological direction.

He further stated that the vision of “Sonar Bangla” (Golden Bengal), envisioned by Rabindranath Tagore, had suffered over the years but had now been revived following the formation of the BJP government under the leadership of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.

Major Boost for Dairy Sector

The proposed Amul Bengal Dairy Project is expected to become one of India’s largest dairy processing facilities with a dedicated focus on curd production, including the iconic Bengali delicacy Mishti Doi. Officials said the project will help:

• Increase milk procurement from local dairy farmers.
• Generate direct and indirect employment across the dairy value chain.
• Promote value-added dairy products from West Bengal.
• Strengthen cooperative dairy infrastructure in eastern India.
• Support rural livelihoods through improved market access for milk producers.

The project is also expected to position West Bengal as a major hub for dairy processing and value-added dairy products while encouraging greater participation of farmers in cooperative dairy networks.

The foundation ceremony was attended by senior leaders of the Central and State governments, officials from Amul, representatives of dairy cooperatives, and members of the public.al services such as preferred seat selection, onboard meals, priority boarding and other travel add-ons.
