Monsoon Session of Parliament, 2026 Highlights: The day was adjourned by both houses

Sloganising and demanding a reply from Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the police action against demonstrators on July 20, both Houses of Parliament were adjourned until 11 a.m. on August 10.

CP Radhakrishnan, the chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, called on the opposition and ruling parties to be seated amid the chaos in the House. During Question Hour, the House was adjourned for the day. Kiren Rijiju stated in the Lok Sabha that the opposition cannot control which ministers attend the House and at what time.

Opposition lawmakers demonstrated in the Parliament House complex earlier today, calling for a statement from Amit Shah. In front of Makar Dwar of Parliament, the MPs demonstrated against the Central administration while holding umbrellas and signs with phrases like “Amit Shah jawab do” (Answer Amit Shah).

The “Taxation and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026,” which aims to change the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007, Income-tax Act, 2025, and Finance Act, 2026, was passed by the Lok Sabha a day earlier. In the midst of opposition members’ demonstrations over their demands over police action against protestors on July 20, the Bill, which Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had submitted for passage, was approved by voice vote without discussion.

Speaker of the Lok Sabha Om Birla urged opposition members to let the House continue on Friday as demonstrations over the alleged theft of donations from Ram temples and the leak of NEET papers persisted in the House. Birla remarked that discourse and discussion may promote democracy and asked members to adhere to parliamentary etiquette. However, the Lok Sabha was postponed until 12 p.m. due to the ongoing protests.

On Friday morning, Rajya Sabha proceedings were postponed for approximately thirty minutes due to opposition members’ persistent disruption of the House and their demands that Home Minister Amit Shah attend in order to address the police action taken against students who demonstrated against the purported NEET paper leak. The Treasury benches responded to the Congress-led opposition MPs’ slogans calling for the Home Minister to be present in the House. Chairman C P Radhakrishnan postponed the proceedings to 12 pm amid the commotion.

Opposition MPs repeatedly interrupted Rajya Sabha proceedings, demanding that Home Minister Amit Shah be present in the House. As a result, the proceedings were adjourned for the day. There was a commotion as soon as the House convened at midday and Chairman C P Radhakrishnan began Question Hour.
