Bengal Plans Kolkata Ring Road, EM Bypass-New Town Flyover to Ease Traffic

The West Bengal government is working on a series of road infrastructure projects aimed at easing traffic congestion in Kolkata and improving connectivity with the city’s rapidly expanding eastern suburbs. Among the key proposals are a ring road around Kolkata and a flyover linking the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass with Rajarhat-New Town.

The proposed ring road is expected to provide an alternative route for vehicles travelling around the city and reduce pressure on major arterial roads. Officials believe improved peripheral connectivity could help divert traffic away from congested stretches and make movement between different parts of the metropolitan region faster.

Another major proposal involves a flyover connecting the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass with New Town. The planned elevated corridor is expected to be around seven kilometres long and could cost approximately ₹900 crore. The project is still under consideration and has not received final approval.

The proposed link is aimed at improving connectivity between the EM Bypass and the rapidly developing Rajarhat-New Town area, which has emerged as an important residential, commercial and business hub. Better connectivity is expected to benefit commuters as well as businesses operating in the region. The government is also examining a broader package of urban infrastructure measures to address the challenges accompanying Kolkata’s expansion. These include improvements to roads and drainage systems, better civic facilities, skywalks and measures to strengthen public infrastructure.

Officials have emphasised the need for long-term planning as the metropolitan region continues to grow. Increasing vehicle numbers and expanding residential and commercial areas have placed additional pressure on existing roads, making the creation of alternative routes increasingly important.

The proposed projects are part of efforts to modernise Kolkata’s transport infrastructure while improving the city’s overall urban environment. Authorities are also looking at renewable energy initiatives and other civic improvements as part of a wider development strategy. While the ring road and flyover proposals are yet to move through all stages of approval, their implementation could significantly reshape traffic movement across Kolkata and its eastern suburbs. The government’s focus on new road links and upgraded civic infrastructure comes amid growing demands for more efficient transportation networks.
