Sensex Falls 388 Points as Oil Prices, Hormuz Uncertainty Weigh on Markets

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 11th August 2026

Indian equity markets ended lower on Tuesday as rising crude oil prices and uncertainty over the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz dampened investor sentiment. The decline came amid continued geopolitical tensions surrounding the United States and Iran, with investors remaining cautious about the potential impact of disruptions to global energy supplies.

The BSE Sensex closed 388 points lower after witnessing a volatile trading session, while the Nifty 50 declined by 112 points. The benchmarks had opened on a subdued note, with the Sensex initially falling around 150 points and the Nifty slipping marginally. Selling pressure intensified during the session as concerns over higher energy costs weighed on equities.

Crude oil remained one of the key factors influencing market sentiment. Brent prices had risen sharply amid uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, an important route for global oil shipments. Analysts said continued restrictions on shipping through the strategic waterway could keep crude prices elevated and increase pressure on oil-importing economies such as India.

The rise in energy prices has also raised concerns about inflation, the rupee and corporate profit margins. India remains heavily dependent on imported crude, making a sustained increase in oil prices a significant risk for the domestic economy. A weaker rupee could further increase the cost of imports and add to inflationary pressures.

Global market cues also remained mixed. US equities ended slightly lower in the previous session, while Asian markets traded unevenly. Investors were additionally cautious ahead of key US inflation data due later in the week, which could influence expectations surrounding the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy.
