After a fight with the police, 110 ABVP members were arrested; the assembly was adjourned since they died a day early

With the BJP holding a statewide bandh and the ABVP organising a march to the state Assembly, the agitation by students and job seekers against purported anomalies in Jharkhand recruitment exams began its eighteenth day on Tuesday. In protest of police intervention against protesters during their march to the Vidhan Sabha on Monday, the BJP organised a bandh from 8 a.m. to midnight. A “Vidhan Sabha March” from the old Assembly buildings to the new facility is planned, according to the ABVP.

According to police, 110 ABVP members were arrested on Tuesday while they marched to the Jharkhand Assembly to protest police action against students who were protesting suspected irregularities in the state’s recruitment exams.

According to an officer, the detention occurred as members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) began their parade from the former Vidhan Sabha area in Ranchi. As demonstrators prevented the bus transporting the arrested workers from moving, altercations broke out between ABVP employes and police.

During the march, police also arrested a few female demonstrators. During the demonstration, a female and two other pupils passed out. The girl was taken by security personnel to a nearby protected area, where she was given water by other demonstrators. Regarding reported police brutality against students, the ABVP demanded explanations from the government. ABVP employe Kumar Divyanshu claimed that the government was attempting to silence young people and students.

The Jharkhand Assembly was adjourned sine die on Tuesday, one day ahead of schedule, after protests by BJP MLAs over the purported baton charge on students.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren stated that the CID investigation into the purported irregularities in the recruitment examinations was in progress amid the commotion in the House. He also asserted that the government’s proposed reform measures were welcomed by the agitated students. Additionally, six demonstrators—two of whom are hospitalized—are on an indefinite hunger strike.
