British actor Nicholas Hoult is set to enter the magical world of Harry Potter after being cast as Gilderoy Lockhart in the second season of HBO’s television adaptation. HBO confirmed the casting on August 11, adding another prominent name to the highly anticipated series.

Hoult will portray the flamboyant Defence Against the Dark Arts professor in the season based on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The character was previously played by Kenneth Branagh in the 2002 film adaptation. Lockhart is known in the wizarding world for his celebrated reputation, charm and numerous claims of heroic achievements, although his confidence and public image far exceed his actual abilities.

The casting also carries a personal connection for Hoult. More than two decades ago, the actor auditioned for the original Harry Potter films, hoping to land the role of Harry Potter. Despite going through several callbacks, he eventually lost the part to Daniel Radcliffe. Hoult later also auditioned for Draco Malfoy, but did not secure that role either.

His return to the franchise in a completely different role therefore marks an interesting turn in his career. Hoult has since established himself through films and franchises including X-Men, Mad Max and the recent Superman, where he played the villain Lex Luthor.

The new HBO series stars Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, alongside Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The first season will adapt Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, while the second season will move the story to Hogwarts’ mysterious Chamber of Secrets. The second season received HBO’s approval in May 2026 and is expected to arrive in late 2027. Hoult’s casting adds further anticipation as the television reboot continues to build its new interpretation of the beloved wizarding universe.
