The Election Commission of India (ECI) has invited representatives of the two rival factions of the Trinamool Congress (TMC)—one led by Mamata Banerjee and the other by Ritabrata Banerjee—for a crucial meeting in New Delhi on September 12. The dispute concerns control of the party, including its name, election symbol and funds. The EC is seeking to resolve the organisational tussle ahead of the September 16 nomination deadline for the Nandigram and Rejinagar Assembly bypolls. The meeting at Nirvachan Sadan could determine which faction is recognised as the legitimate TMC and potentially avert complications for candidates contesting the upcoming bypolls.
