19 Die in Nagaland After Alleged Consumption of Spurious Liquor

At least 19 people have died in Nagaland over two days after allegedly consuming spurious liquor, according to reports. The deaths were reported from Mokokchung and Tuensang districts, prompting authorities to launch an investigation into the suspected sale and consumption of illicit alcohol.

Eight deaths were reported in Mokokchung district, while another 11 people died in Tuensang. The incidents have raised concerns over the circulation of illegally produced or contaminated liquor in the two districts.

Following the deaths, police launched a crackdown and formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the circumstances surrounding the suspected liquor poisoning. Officials are examining where the liquor was produced, how it reached consumers and whether a wider network was involved in its distribution. Police have arrested 19 people in connection with the incident as part of the investigation. Authorities have also seized nearly 3,000 bottles of suspected liquor during the operation.

Samples collected during the investigation have been sent to Guwahati for forensic examination. Officials are awaiting the laboratory results to establish whether the liquor contained toxic substances and to determine the precise cause of the deaths. The authorities are also expected to question those arrested and examine the distribution chain of the suspected spurious liquor. Investigators will seek to establish whether the accused were involved in its manufacture, transportation or sale.
